What a year, 2023! I appreciate every bit of it.
This year, we covered several topics»
Animal-free thesis (Beyond Impact) - In my role as a Partner at Beyond Impact, I have had the opportunity to explore animal-free solutions from multiple angles, including policy, investment strategy, and societal impact. I've written pieces covering topics aligned with Beyond Impact's mission to transition toward a cleaner, kinder, and healthier planet. Specifically, I examined the taxation of meat, the climate opportunity in alternative proteins, a critique of insect-based proteins, whether medicines are cruelty-free, the societal impacts of the meat industry, and the need for greater protein diversity. My goal is to provide a multifaceted view through an animal-free lens, highlighting the problems as well as the promising solutions. As part of the Beyond Impact team, I am committed to supporting founders and catalyzing capital to scale compassionate innovation.
Alternative Fund/Financing Models - From my early days as an investor, I have been fascinated by innovative and disruptive financing models beyond traditional funds. Given my experience, I'm always interested in exploring ways aspiring fund managers can launch new funds or create impactful and unique value investing models not driven by hype. I've covered syndicates, revenue share funds, and micro-acquisition funds. My goal is to highlight creative approaches to mobilizing capital in our rapidly changing world. I believe next-generation fund managers have an opportunity to challenge norms and build better alignment through new incentive models.
Canvas - I enjoy utilizing mental models and frameworks to structure my thinking, especially around building new ventures. When I first began exploring fund creation, I developed a Fund Model Canvas to map out the key components. This year, I expanded on that approach by creating frameworks to outline an Angel Investor Canvas as well as a Venture Studio Canvas. My goal with these "canvases" is to provide an organized visualization of the core pieces - a kind of mental blueprint.
Additionally, I covered a piece on Sewa (aka Seva) - which I consider a spiritual tool to purify our soul. Serving others also created an environment that kept us grounded and balanced.
What an incredible year of growth it has been for our substack community! Last year we had fewer than 1,000 subscribers, but now in 2023, we have grown to around 5,000 loyal readers. Our articles are reaching between 3,000-4,000 views each, which is just remarkable. I am so grateful that our message is resonating and that we have built such a wonderful community here. My vision for this platform is to use it to explore topics related to building a more conscious world, such as conscious venture funds, studios, and mobilizing capital in ways that benefit people, the planet, and animals.
I want to gift every reader an opportunity to read a piece on Balance - how to build your spiritual, physical, and financial balance »
